TITLE: ISLAMIC INSPIRED CANDY DISH
In this project, we were privileged with the unique opportunity to use black clay. This clay was brought in on a whim as a surprise, and gave a unique challenge. The clay is deep brown before firing, turning milky in the bisque phase, and finally turns jet black in the final firing. This cup was a test piece before the clay's use in a different project. Before tackling the candy dish, a sample cup was made. The black clay was kneaded with white clay and repeatedly cleaned and buffed for a marbled texture before being topped with food-safe, matte, clear glaze. After this firing was successful, the candy dish making was commenced, after research into the beautiful calligraphy designs in ancient Islamic pottery. It was much more challenging than expected!
